There's no doubt we're living through a very tough economic period. We see its effects not only here at home, but also in Haiti, where its impact is magnified by the country's massive level of poverty and the devastating effects of the earthquake. We see our Haitian brothers and sisters in the Grand'Anse River Valley struggling now more than ever to put even a single daily meal on their tables as refugees from Port-au-Prince have poured into the region, placing an additional burden on the already precarious food supplies. We see children standing in the street as their families wrestle with the painful choice of sending them to school for another year, or keeping the money to pay for food.
But we also see hope. Our "Beans for Life" program, initiated in 2009 in response to promises to enhance the stability of food production in the Grand'Anse River Valley, and our school construction projects have already made more classroom seats available. What's more, our scholarships have helped fill those seats with eager students.
