Donations to the Earthquake Relief Fund are targeted toward purchasing cement to help area residents rebuild their homes that were damaged or destroyed in the earthquake. General donations to New Life for Haiti pay for projects in the Grand'Anse River Valley and also cover a modest salary for Steve and Joline Moore, our staff couple working in Haiti. From time to time, they encounter needs above and beyond what their salary provides. Such needs might include emergency airline tickets, repairs to some of their personal belongings, or unforeseen rises in the price of food or other necessary supplies.
This latter situation is occurring right now for two reasons. First, the halt to the normal flow of goods from Port-au-Prince to Jeremie has greatly decreased the supply of food, gasoline, and diesel in the area. Second, the sudden influx of refugees into the area has increased the demand for such products. As any first year economics student will tell you, low supply and high demand are the perfect conditions for generating rising prices.
Steve and Joline have committed themselves to staying in Marfranc through this crisis to help the people of the Grand’Anse River Valley, but they could use your help. Would you consider supplementing their emergency fund with a small donation?
