Steve and Joline Moore have spent their first night in the new staff house in Marfranc, Haiti. “It feels GREAT to be living in Marfranc!”, exclaimed Joline, “We have been waiting for a year to be able to be here!” Indeed, although ground wasn't broken for the staff house until February of this year, it has been in the planning stages since last year. Construction on Kay Bo Rivye, which means “House by the river” in Haitian Kreyol, has progressed steadily since then, with the final finishing of the cement walls and floors being completed in recent days. Although the house is not 100 percent complete, it is complete enough for the Moore's to take occupancy. Starting to move in Walls done, only the floor left Although living in the new house, the Moore's still have a few more frequent trips to Jérémie ahead of them. “We aren't done moving yet. Until then, we are making one or two more trips a day. I'll just be glad when all of our stuff is here and the old place is clean and the keys are returned!”, stated Joline. They expect to return the keys to their rental home on Tuesday. Marfranc is only about 100 feet higher in elevation than Jérémie, but the fact that it sits in the valley of the Grande Anse River means that Marfranc's nights are cooler. “It's quieter here...and it has been raining every night. We love it”, said Joline. When asked about the long-term benefits of living right in Marfranc, where New Life for Haiti is concentrating its work, Joline knew immediately which benefit she was most looking forward to. “Definitely being close to the people we are working with. You can't really help people until you get to know them, and you have to live with them to do that.” Although Marfranc is only 12 miles from Jérémie, the gravel road that connects them is winding and bumpy. The fastest a four-wheeled vehicle can travel on this road is just over 30 miles per hour, and then only for a short stretch. As a result, the bumpy ride typically lasts between 40 and 45 minutes. “It will be nice on Sunday to take five minutes to get to church instead of 45 minutes on a bumpy road!”, exclaimed Joline, “Now that is a huge advantage!” |
