When New Life for Haiti teams travel through Port-au-Prince, they stay at the Matthew 25 House and have occasionally used the services of the Mission Aviation Fellowship. We have anxiously awaited word on the status of these friends, and this morning, reports filtered in on their conditions. The Matthew 25 House is situated in the Delmas neighborhood in Port-au-Prince. Patrick, Vivian, and Sister Mary are all safe. The concrete first floor of the house itself is structurally sound, but as Patrick reports, “upstairs is pretty bad, unusable as a matter of fact.” The upstairs east bedrooms at the Matthew 25 House as they appeared in 2008. The NLH teams typically stay in these upstairs rooms. These bedrooms have concrete posts and ceilings with walls constructed of lightweight wood materials and screens, while the bathrooms that separate them have cinder block walls. Repairing or rebuilding these rooms for future use may be feasible but will likely have to wait. The Matthew 25 House is one of the few places in the area that had power last night. They also own a soccer field adjacent to the house. They opened up the gates to the field last night and put some lights out on the field to serve as a triage and treatment center. Everyone in the house scrambled to work. “Sister Mary, Vivian and our six guests performed superbly in treating many injured”, reported Patrick. Three Haitian doctors eventually showed up to help. The Matthew 25 House staff and guests worked until about 2 AM before turning in for the night. Later this morning, New Life for Haiti received word from Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) that all of their staff and families in Port-au-Prince are safe. These missionary pilots who have flown us to our work site on two occasions when regular air travel was unavailable are all safe along with their families. Pastor Plaisir, our partner in Marfranc, has several children who live in Port-au-Prince and elsewhere in the country. He was very relieved and thankful to hear that all of his children are safe. Thanks go out to all who have prayed for these people over the past two days, and continued prayers are requested for all those who are still affected by this disaster. |
