Jul 13th, 2010 Haiti Trip
LifeSpring Community Church Work Trip
Jul 13, 2010 - Jul 20, 2010
Taking a trip to Haiti is a tremendous opportunity, and for many a life-changing experience. New Life for Haiti is involved in projects that truly make life better in Haitian communities. However, a big part of why we encourage you to come is simply because it gives you new perspectives on so many things in life. Below you will find information about this past trip. May the Lord bless you as you read about what we did on this trip, and consider coming to Haiti with us on a future trip.
Accomplishments
This team split up to work on two projects. Mark Matich stayed in Marfranc with Steve to weld the frames for the new solar power system at Kay Bo Rivye, our staff and guest house in Marfranc. Thanks to Mark's efforts, Kay Bo Rivye is now operating under solar power, and is now much less reliant on expensive diesel and gasoline to run the generators.

While Mark stayed behind in Marfranc, Fran Leeman, Michael Zamora, Peter Brooke, Jeff Gates, Chris Baker, and Thom McCluskey hiked to Chameau. They were accompanied by a large group of residents from Chameau who had come to help them carry the supplies needed by the team to put a new tin roof on the old church and parsonage there. The Chameau team accomplished their goal, which means that the pastor in Chameau no longer lives under a leaky roof, and people can now gather for church and school at the church building even when it's raining.

When the team was in Chameau, a young girl named Kimberlin had an epileptic seizure in front of the team. New Life for Haiti is now working with Kimberlin and her mother to ensure she receives proper medical treatment.

Today was actually a beautiful day, only sprinkled a few times! Had some clouds so it wasn't too hot and some sunshine, so hope that the mountain weather was equally as nice.
Had a phone call this morning that Pastor Fran is having trouble with his ears and equilibrium. Guess he has had trouble with this in the past, but not for the last 10 years. This morning when he woke up, his head would spin when he would sit up or try to stand. Couldn't walk without feeling dizzy. He spent part of his day in the chair watching, but then ended up laying down for most of the day. He says that it usually goes away in a few days and not much he can do about it until it disappears. Please keep him in your prayers, as they will be going down the mountain on Sunday.....It will be a long, tough walk, if his ears are still bad. They got the roof on the house today! WOW.....however they ran out of tin for the ridge caps. They called Steve and Pastor Plaisir had some extra tin in a storage place at the camp, so Steve will be taking up 6 pieces of tin to Moron tomorrow and some of the Chameau people will be coming down the mountain to meet him and walk the tin up to the church and the guys can finish the job. We are thankful that Pastor has some of the same type of tin......so that the job can be completed. I didn't get any new pictures or information today, so that is the best I can do!
Wanted to tell you about Mark Matich, who stayed back here at Kay Bo Rivye to work with Steve. Originally Mark was going to help weld some of the windows for the school here in Marfranc. However before we went on vacation in May, Steve was unable to get the metal bars that he needed for the windows. He was hopeful that when we returned there would be some in Jeremie. Alas, when he went in last Monday, when we returned, there wasn't any in town. One store said maybe on Saturday there would be some. Mark has been welding the framework for the solar system that we just received, so that the panels can be put on the roof. He almost has 1 panel done and Laurie and I will paint it hopefully tomorrow. The other frame is 1/2 finished so he hopes to get it done tomorrow afternoon. This is a huge blessing and will help Steve get this system up and running sooner!!!!

We have been having fun with Mark and Laurie. Dis, our yard man has been helping Mark with the welding, it's been a lot of fun! Mark loves music and plays the guitar! He has been blessing us with wonderful music in the evenings.
Keep everyone in prayer as they finish the work they came here to do....this is a great group of people!

Our team of 8 guys, Vilex, Pastor Plaisir and Mme. Asson (our cook) all began their adventure in Chameau this morning at 7:00 AM. They were loaded and out the gate bright and early, picked up Mme. Asson and Pastor in Marfranc then headed towards Moron (about 8 miles) and then down to the river, where the truck was unloaded and supplies, water and tons of things were carried up to the small village of Chameau.
The rough, tiny path that the truck took to get to the river was extremely dangerous because we had a huge, huge rain storm the evening before and everything was muddy and slick. Steve wasn't sure that they were going to make it in a couple of places, it was very treacherous. However, God is good and protected all of them and they arrived at the river to debark. When they first got there, no one was there to meet them. People from the Chameau church were asked to come down the mountain and help carry the supplies, water, equipment, food and tons of things up to Chameau. Within a few minutes of the truck arrival though, people started arriving and they were on their way.
We got our first report at about 11:30 that they had 1/2 the roof on.....but that a huge rain storm had moved in and they were waiting it out before starting again. We were not sure that they would even be able to get more done today. This evening, Laurie got on Facebook and there were pictures from one of the team members, Chris. He had his Blackberry with him and had taken pictures of the FINISHED roof on the church and she posted them on Facebook! It was so great to see the roof done. The church roof was the easier of the two roofs. It was a straight roof with few if any cuts......so they were able to finish it!!! Amazing. The parsonage will be a little more cutting and work, it is not a straight roof, so we will see how they do. If they don’t get it done tomorrow, I'm sure they will by mid-day on Sat. and have time for some hiking and visiting with people! It seems to be raining a lot, so that may hamper them as well.

They took some balloons and suckers with them and it looks like they had a ball with the kids. Can't wait to see all the pictures and hear all of their stories......

Haven't seen them yet, but Steve called and they arrived....
Not sure how many carry ons they got, but the 4 bags that were priority bags (tagged) made it. The other 10 did NOT.
Supposed to be another plane at 1:00 today...so will see what shows up! Ahhhh....life in Haiti.
Will let you know more later, just wanted you to know all is well!
