On the morning of March 8th, as the world was tuning into the broadcasts about chaos in Port-au-Prince, dedicated parents in rural Haiti followed their children to the School of Hope for a day of training and awareness, marking the significance of International Women's Day. The parent conference, hosted together with IDETTE, a national organization committed to ending child rights violations in Haiti, aimed to enlighten parents about the importance of commemorating the achievements and ongoing challenges faced by women and girls.
With a total of 89 participants, including 67 women, 7 girls, and 15 men, the day kicked off with a prayer, setting a tone of unity and reflection. Two IDETTE trainers gave a guided presentation about the historical significance of International Women's Day and the importance of fighting for women’s rights. With a focus on the prevailing situation of violence hindering women's empowerment within their communities, it was emphasized that women must continue to be the central pillars in their families, fostering environments where children's rights are protected.
One of the critical discussions revolved around safeguarding children from exploitation, highlighting the unfortunate reality of negligence leading to instances of exploitation. The trainers, “explained to them that there are many children who are victims…due to the negligence of their parents…where they trust everyone with their children." The importance of fostering a culture of solidarity within families was stressed to ensure children grow up in safe and nurturing environments.
As the day progressed, participants actively engaged in dialogue, expressing their shock at societal norms that perpetuate harmful practices. The misconception that minors could engage in relationships with adults sparked critical reflection and discussion among attendees.
Haitian Field Director, Vilex Plaisir, offered words of encouragement and practical advice. Several participants took the floor to welcome the initiative and ask when there will be another activity like this. Vilex urged all parents to actively engage in similar initiatives organized by the School of Hope, fostering a sense of collective responsibility towards safeguarding the future generations.
The event concluded on a high note, with gratitude extended to all participants for their active involvement and enthusiasm. As a gesture of appreciation, sandwiches and cola were distributed.
A special acknowledgment was extended to New Life for Haiti for their support, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration in empowering communities and fostering a better understanding of parental responsibilities towards children. IDETTE believes “with this we will have a better generation.”
In essence, the training and awareness day ignited conversations and inspired collective action towards a more equitable and just society. As we watch the government struggle to establish peaceful relations in the nation’s capital, let us recommit ourselves to the cause of educating families, upholding the rights of women and children worldwide.
