“It’s really a catastrophe”

A flooded Grand Anse River under a gray cloudy sky

As New Life for Haiti was wrapping up Giving Tuesday earlier this week, our friends in Haiti were dealing with significant rainfall over the course of several days.

Flooding became a major problem all over the region. Our Haitian field director reported water on some roadways near the New Life for Haiti home base more than three feet deep. At the peak of flood stage, the Grand Anse River appeared to be three times as wide as it normally is. And the river beside the School of Hope, Rivye Mawo, overflowed its banks and flooded our classrooms.

It’s too soon to know the full extent of the damage. But our administrators, teachers, and crews have already begun shoveling mud out the doors and cleaning off what can be salvaged. Books and other items have been set out in the sun to dry . . . and we’re praying for more sunny days so classes can resume soon and students can take their end-of-term exams before Christmas.

While we believe all of our staff, students, and families are safe and accounted for, the damage has been wrought.

Homes are flooded and waterlogged, their roofs no match for the constant downpour, their foundations insufficient to protect occupants from the water.

Farms, gardens, and livestock have been washed away or swept downstream in landslides. Crops on the verge of being harvested are gone.

It will be a difficult season of recovery for many.

And New Life for Haiti would desperately like to help. That’s where you come in.

Our resources are stretched thin. We’ve cut back our spending and pressed pause on some programs. And now we’re asking God to take what we have to offer and multiply it in a miraculous way. So together we can continue to respond to the urgent needs we see around us.

Will you join us?

Thank you so much to everyone who gave generously leading up to and on Giving Tuesday. While we haven’t met our fundraising goal yet, we are deeply grateful for your faithfulness and kindness.

If you missed the opportunity to give toward New Life for Haiti’s Kore campaign, there’s still time for you to show your support for our Haitian friends.

Your gift today will remind someone in Haiti that they are not forgotten.
